Some History Behind the TRX Suspension Trainer

Did you know that the TRX Suspension Trainer was developed by a U.S. Navy SEAL troop commander? It’s true!

In the summer of 1997 while deployed in Asia, Randy Hetrick was looking for a way to maintain peak physical conditioning during periods when the SEALS’ missions were on hold. Without access to traditional training facilities, he started experimenting with a jiu-jitsu belt, straps and nylon webbing from a parachute harness. He hand-stitched an inventive Y-shaped training strap with rubber boat repair tools. The straps had handles that doubled as stirrups, which allowed Hetrick and his teammates to do pull-ups, curls, core exercise, and leg work. Over the next few months they rapidly developed a variety of bodyweight exercises specifically designed for this unique training harness. And so, began the evolution of the TRX, also known as Total Body Resistance Exercise.

Over the course of the next 20 years the TRX movement has become quite a fitness phenomenon. Today they are used across the globe by professional athletes, personal trainers, in gyms, physical therapy, and even senior fitness settings. The versatility of suspension exercises allows the user to build true functional strength, improve balance, flexibility and core stability all at once. The exercises can be easily modified to accommodate any fitness level, and the straps are adjustable to fit different body sizes, limb lengths, and intensity modifications.

They key to any successful fitness program is variety, convenience and fun. We believe the TRX is an excellent portable fitness tool that will allow you to “make your body your machine”.
